well I can get an xterm to pop up and seems to work, but there are
lines, and blanks spaces all over the screen (stuff is unreadable).

in 16bpp (startx -- -depth 16) there are different lines ;)
but still lines... also after about 10 seconds in 16bpp, the
system locks up hard (no telnet in etc.)

havnt tried messing with modelines, I really wouldnt have a clue
what to do with them.

Would it be possible for me to try using your XFree86 binary and
your XF86Config file?
