Yep, it is. The only other files read by gnome-session before the splash screen appears (now that you've remove all ~/.gnome/session* files) are ~/.gnome/Gnome and ~/.gnome/sound/system. Try moving those files out of the way once GNOME is shutdown. You may also want to remove ~/.gnome/.gnome-smproxy-*.
