Thats is not true - 2.2 doesn't allow passwordless accounts

You'l  have to mount / and /usr first. ( vipw and passwd is under /usr/sbin )

The easiest way to solve your problem is to do what I did when it happened to me
( shouldn't there be some kind of warning about new features like this in sysinstall? )
is to reboot with the boot floppy, go to the shell by pressing alt-f4 and run passwd.
