Once you have the space to install a working and usable (enjoyable !) system, it doesn't matter if one takes 20 MB more or less than the other. I'd guess that with Linux, you can have "better" (in the sense of "more features") 'microinstallations', but this is only relevant to a very small part of the userbase. I don't know for sure with the newer linux-kernels, but the old 2.0.x-series could not handle files larger than 2 GB - this is a real problem if you want to have an image of a DVD on you ext2-partition....
