FYI, I added logic to auto-update-system (part of sysutils/auto-admin) to
mitigate this situation.  After updating the ports tree, it checks to see if
the version of pkg in ports matches what's installed.  If it is newer, pkg =
is
automatically reinstalled from source.  I've been using this feature for mo=
nths
now and it has corrected the issue several times.

Users who run

auto-update-system --defaults

will not get bitten by this issue.
