Try adding the following to your config and seeing if that fixes
things.

set ascii_chars="yes"

I don't think the port or the defaults have changed, but Mutt might be
responding differently to the TERM that the gnometerm uses.  Check out
aterm as an alternative: you might like it.  -sc
