An improved version of the Artec AS6E control program is at http://www.iet.unipi.it/~luigi/ppscan990516.c compared to the previous one, it now can produce better color/grey/bw output at 300/200/100dpi (also 50dpi for color/grey). ppscan mode x0 y0 x1 y1 > pnmfile is all what you need to scan an image. By default requires a bidirectional port, although it can be made to work in NIBBLE mode (i.e. any parallel port) by commenting a couple of lines. I have tested on a 2.2.x system with direct access to the parallel port (opening /dev/io).
