I had the same problem. It seems that there are two versions of the card, the original 3c590, and the 3c590b, which is what everyone is selling these days. There was a change made in the board which seems to break the vx driver under FreeBSD. I didn't have any of the original 3c590 boards available, so I grabbed a 3c595, which I did have, and it works like a champ.
