this isn't a direct answer, but what i did recently for a 386 laptop,
was to just take the harddrive, stick it in a pc with net and/or cdrom,
install fbsd, then put back in the laptop.

this however would require an adaptor to allow a standard ide cable to
plug into the laptop drive.

anyway.. a suggestion.. which worked well for me
