If you have not already done so I suggest you read
http://www.freebsd.org/releases/5.4R/migration-guide.html (and of course
/usr/src/UPDATING) which describes
how to upgrade from 4.x to 5.x.  Follow those instructions closely -
upgrading from 4.x to 5.x is somewhat complicated.
