I'm curious as to whether/how much the COMPAT_43 option is still needed
in a modern system. Before someone says, "Why don't you take it out and
find out for yourself?" I would be glad to do that and report the
results (after the release of course) if someone could state with
reasonable assurance that most things would still work. :)
