In the handbook (http://www.freebsd.org/handbook/handbook55.html).

But the Reader's Digest version is, MD5 is more secure and is
exportable from the US.  DES is the algorithm used on other Unix
machines (to allow password sharing and NIS).

Are there any issues with using the international version of DES in
France?
