I followed your lead and set
1.
/boot/loader.conf
vfs.zfs.vol.mode=3D2

2.
zfs set volmode=3Dgeom zroot/swap

and rebooted.=20

I have not had an issue with exporting the pool so far after 6 import/expor=
ts
of the USB-connected single disk vdev pool. I never used geli to encrypt the
data on the USB-connected disk.

I will keep monitoring though and update this thread.
