I've tried it against various gig-ethernet adapters and it always comes up as a 100Mbit link. My ProLiant has two BCM5708's and connecting them back to back with a crossed cable fails too, that is - the negotiated link speed is 100Mbits. This is the 'ifconfig -a' output after connecting the devices back-to-back: bce0: flags=8802 mtu 1500 options=3b ether 00:18:71:75:dd:fe media: Ethernet autoselect (100baseTX ) status: active bce1: flags=8802 mtu 1500 options=3b ether 00:18:71:75:dd:fc media: Ethernet autoselect (100baseTX ) status: active lo0: flags=8049 mtu 16384 inet6 fe80::1%lo0 prefixlen 64 scopeid 0x3 inet6 ::1 prefixlen 128 inet 127.0.0.1 netmask 0xff000000 My dmesg looks as: Copyright (c) 1992-2006 The FreeBSD Project.
