There are several IDE-RAID solutions ranging from the budget (read: cheap) to the robust (read: expensive) that work in FreeBSD. If you insist on IDE disks, and are looking for budget, there are several people that recommend the promise controllers found down on many motherboards. If you're looking for robust, there are ATA controllers from 3ware and Intel that offer a hardware based RAID solution. It all boils down to the performance and reliability you expect/need. If you're running a low usage MySQL server and are looking for simple mirroring, either a Promise controller or the onboard IDE controller with software mirroring should be sufficient. If you're doing heavy usage and need 99.9% uptime with hot plug etc, you'll want to explore the hardware options or SCSI. -Sam -----Original Message----- From: owner-freebsd-hardware@freebsd.org [mailto:owner-freebsd-hardware@freebsd.org] On Behalf Of carmoda Sent: Tuesday, March 30, 2004 4:50 PM To: freebsd-hardware@freebsd.org Subject: Re: Intel ICH5 ATA100 IDE/ATA controllers support so, what are my options? one of these machines is going to run a proxy. i may need to house an SQL database as well. is any sort of IDE RAID supported? is it NOT worth looking into? /iamcarmoda ----- Original Message ----- From: "Samuel Clements" To: "'carmoda'" ; Sent: Wednesday, March 31, 2004 9:34 AM Subject: RE: Intel ICH5 ATA100 IDE/ATA controllers support > From > http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/man.cgi?query=ata&sektion=4&manpath=FreeBSD+5 .2.1 > -RELEASE : > > The currently supported ATA/SATA controller chips are: > > Intel: PIIX, PIIX3, PIIX4, ICH, ICH0, ICH2, ICH3, ICH4, ICH5. > > Just don't expect the ICH5R or most any SATA chipset based RAID to work > anytime soon.
