That all sounds right. Getting the servers started might be
interesting in this case, but I haven't tried it so can't offer
advice.

Vncserver uses ~/.vnc/xstartup like .xinitrc, so you can start any wm
you want in it. For performance reasons, I'd recommend a monochrome
backdrop instead of a picture.

Yes it's a port in net/vnc, or alternatively net/tightvnc if you
expect to use it on slow connections. If you want commercial support,
try net/trividavnc. There's also a gnome client in the ports tree.
