I can't speak for others, but I consider myself a fairly competent
programmer
(I recently released a book on Internet E-mail protocols and standards, and
am currently writing a high end secure server). When programming in NT,
I use Visual Studio 6 (straight C for server stuff, C++/MFC for GUI stuff).
When programming in FreeBSD, I use micro-emacs (not Gnu-Emacs),
gcc, gmake, and the Gnu debugger. I find I can be about as productive in
either environment. Use of command line tools makes it easy to do work
over telnet - really don't like X/Motif, etc. But then I'm a bit of a
dinosaur -
I graduated in 1973, and cut my teeth on CDC mainframes.

In the days before word processors, if you were a writer, the specific
typewriter you used didn't make a lot of difference in the quality or
quantity of your writing - most of the writing takes place in the mind.
The same is true of programming tools. A really nice IDE can improve
your productivity to some extent, but it will not make a hack into a
great programmer.

Subject: Which environment for good progamming?

Hi, All!
Is There in FreeBSD any environment for programming (something like
C++Builder for Windowzzz)?
I don`t think what real good programmers in FreeBSD write their programms
in simple redactors (vi/ed), but what they use?
Help me, plz!

Best regards,
Andrey M. Fedorov. :)
