Got answer from freebsd-x11@freebsd.org - use the vesa driver. It sort of works. Xorg -configure edit xorg.conf.new to use the vesa driver and the Radeon chip (BusId) copy to /etc/X11/xorg.conf log in to ttyv2 as a normal user startx works using the default xinitrc Exiting from the login xterm sometimes causes the machine to freeze. The screen goes blank. No response to keyboard, does nothing I cannot ping it from another machine. The laptop is hung. I left it for 20 minutes no change. Cycle power. After cycle power, fsck takes a long time. Anything that requires a disk access takes several seconds to start. `vi .cshrc` takes 7 seconds before the file is displayed! I hate cycle power. After fsck completes, response is normal - no noticeable delay between time hit and the file being displayed. tomdean
