Thanks for the advice. By experimenting I found that I needed the above and a few other things in loader.conf radeonkmsfw_RV610_me_load="YES" radeonkmsfw_RV610_pfp_load="YES" radeonkmsfw_R600_rlc_load="YES" radeonkms_load="YES" Now vt(4) works fine at boot.
