Ping uses ICMP (Internet Control Message Protocol) Echo messages which are
specially treated by the IP stack.  They aren't sent to any particular
port since they aren't destined for an application.

If you want to check the existence of a service, use telnet with the
optional port argument, ie `telnet machine 80'. If it comes
back "Connection Refused" the service is not running.
