Make sure that your hardware is where your software expect it, or tell your software where your hardware is. GENERIC FreeBSD kernels expect ed0 at io addr 0x280, irq 5 and mem 0xd800. If you want to use ed1 it should be at io addr 0x300, irq 5 and mem 0xd800. If you would rather change FreeBSD, you can type '-c' at the boot prompt and set it to what your hardware is.
