I have seen some '<application>Gimp</application>' and 
'<application>GIMP</application>' too.
I guess it was in multimedia and x11.

daemon# fgrep -n GIMP 
~tsgan/freebsd_mn_doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/multimedia/chapter.sgml 
| more
1719:   are useable as a <application>GIMP</application>

daemon# fgrep -n Gimp
