Did you try entering your root password when it prompted you?  If
so, that's your mistake.
If I remember correctly, the default MySQL install creates a root
user with full privies, but NO PASSWORD.
Thus, initially when you log in, you must NOT enter a password.
It's a VERY good idea to fix this first thing.
