I don't really use the outer buttons, but they *do* work.

If you're using XDM put this in ~/.xsession, otherwise stick it in
~/.xinitrc:

xmodmap -e "pointer = 1 2 3 6 7 4 5"

Also, you need the following lines in XF86Config's mouse section:

Option	"Buttons" 	"7"
Option	"ZAxisMapping"	"6 7"
