This usually means that you don't have an active boot partition.  Boot 
DOS from a floppy and use fdisk to set your first drive to active.

I'm guessing that you have DOS on the first drive, and installed FreeBSD 
on the second, right?  If so, the boot manager probably got installed on 
the second drive, where it doesn't do any good.  You'll need to install a 
boot manager on the first drive.
