Check out /etc/login.conf. This file contains profile definitions to enable an administrator to set various resource limits for groups of users. In particular, the line you want is: :maxproc=infinity: More details can be found with man 5 login.conf Although 2 processes is not very many - AFAIK, it will cause problems even reading startup files....
