I don't know which is better -- but -- pppd (kernel ppp) has worked all the time, everytime. I wish I could use ijppp for the convenience. (It works with Cisco's but not with others.) I suspect the tunnel driver, e.g., hosts that understand it work -- those that don't can't, but I don't know.
