1.  Use DOS FDISK and delete the FreeBSD (NON-DOS) partition.
2.  Create the DOS partition.
3.  Format as normal.

You can also use a DOS boot disk and check it.

What kind of errors are you running into?  It would be easier for us to
debug this w/o destroying FreeBSD in the process.
