hmm,  maybe.  The book pre-dates 3.0 for sure, and 3.0 was my first
exposure to freebsd.  But I've been making ultrix kernels (developed
from an earlier version of bsd) since the mid-1980s and it always
needed it.  My guess is it's always been needed and it got left out
of the book.
