I don't know if this helps you any, but I think that I used to use
a ESS1868. I can't remember for sure. But if its one of the cards that I
think it is, maybe these kernel config options will be of use to you:

Add this: device pcm0
Comment out all VoxWare drivers, such as snd0, sb0, sbxvi0, etc.

This worked for me. Also of possible note:

CHIPSET:
    ESS1868
    ESS688

        http://www.esstech.com

    pnp 1 1 os enable irq0 7 drq0 1 port0 0x220

There used to be documentation for the 1868 on the ESS site
(files ds1868b1.pdf and ds1868b2.pdf) but I am unable to find
it now (980122). I have asked ESS but no reply so far.

    partly supported in SB emulation.

(the ESS688 is used on many notebooks. It is probably able to do 8
    and 16-bit, half duplex).

That was from the file /usr/src/sys/i386/isa/snd/CARDS on my
3.2-RELEASE system.

						Good luck,
						Jaime
