If the name is written Xxxx Yxxx, then Xxxx is usually given and Yxxx is usually family. Unless it is written Yxxx, Xxxxx. I've found that, in general, when communicating with the Japanese about FreeBSD, remembering the -san is much more important than accidentally calling them the wrong name. I'm told that this is much more offensive in a business environment than in the relatively imformal environment that the BSD project runs in.
