There is actually a newer rev of pilot-link available (I think you have 
to access CVS directly, though) that is supposed to have direct USB 
support on FreeBSD.

I have not tested this... I bought a serial cradle for my visor so I 
could continue using jPilot.

Just a data point... I have been able to sync my visor over IR with my 
laptop using birda.  Worked like a champ.
