First, make sure you compile X with the option to create a.out libraries. Next, reboot :-(. For some reason, ldconfig does not find the new X a.out libraries unless you reboot. You could try explicitly including /usr/X11R6/lib/aout with ldconfig yourself too. After that, Netscape and the JDK should work great.
