Before or after installing BSD?

Unless the BSD install screws with the boot sector for some reason, other
than installing its own Boot Manager, I don't see why it would matter. And
if I don't tell it to install the Boot Manager, how can I dual boot to
either OS? And if it does install the Boot Manager, and the Boot Manager
doesn't work - which seems to be the case, one way or another - then how
would replacing the MBR with the DOS version be an improvement? I'd end up
only being able to boot DOS on that system.
