Yes they did. IMHO gnome-2.2 is ready for desktop ;-)

and since the most ports have the version 2.2 and up
i'm think its faster. (debugging-code turned off?)

but what's about gnumeric2/gthumb2/gal2 and libgnomeprint - are 
there any solutions?
