Very true, but it's more effective.
Can I point you at the following two URLs, both of which are very useful
when getting to grips with DocBook and SGML:

Also, take a look at

where you'll find links to a couple of documents I've put together with an
HTML rendering and the original SGML source. One of them (the 'make world'
tutorial) can also be downloaded as a tar.gz file that includes a sample
Makefile that *should* help you get started on the actual conversion
process.
I'm going to try and put together more of a tutorial over the next few
weeks. If you get the opportunity to make any notes as you're learning
this stuff, please pass them on.
