It was because bwrite/sbwrite were wrong wrt which opened things writable.
Now the patch at the URL elsewhere in this thread works.  The remaining
bug was that disk.d_bsize had to be set to the sectorsize, or things to
work as newfs needs them to.  Where can I pick up my dunce cap?
