AFAIK: there's no "one true way"(TM) to open a shared lib on every OS, libltdl tries to provide a pseudo-standard for this. There also seem to be inconsistencies in some implementations of dlopen() itself, so not every useful feature is available everywhere. lt_dlopen() seems to provide some of those features on platforms where they aren't available. For some of those features the data in the .la files are needed. AFAIK our dlopen() is one of the good ones, so we don't need the .la files. Unfortunately lt_dlopen() refuses to open a lib if there's no .la file. So far the only reason why we need the .la file is because there's a bug somewhere... > Kris: can you please explain your first statement ?
