installed with the latest version of dvdread:

With the older 8.5 ports installed and with X4.3 audio and 
video is fine.

  I stopped ogle with a ctrl-C. The DVD into and menu screen 
played just fine, audio and video, then after starting the movie 
it fell apart.

This looks like an audio problem now that I have dug in deeper. 
Again I am using an Aureal Vortex 2 onboard sound chip (ASUS) 
and the Aureal port to enable sound functions.
