UNIX was never meant to be a "desktop", but that's only because there
wasn't a concept of "desktop" back then. UNIX was the desktop of its
day. When everyone else was making systems to run on expensive
mainframes for governments and huge corporations, UNIX was made for a
mini-computer affordable by universities and smaller companies.
