I've asked about this before, but the 2 times I've gone searching for the "guidelines" I've generally found myself in the twisty maze of ports documentation and given up - that stuff needs a rewrite so badly it's practically screaming for it. I've read the "configuring the Makefile" section and there's nothing even remotely close to "guidelines" there, just a painful examination of each and every variable (and I know, I wrote a lot of it). I've said it before and I'll say it again: If you truly wish to have the ports follow some set of "guidelines" then you have to make a /usr/ports/template port that contains fill-in-the-blank fields for everything and instructions to delete everything that's not relevant to your port. A set of guidelines without a readable blueprint is pretty useless. Jordan
