I use FreeBSD as my desktop OS on my notebook and my desktop 
workstation.  I have nvidia cards in both - which I wouldn't suggest for 
a "simple" xwindows install, since the nv drivers don't work with the 
newer cards.  I had to use the linux ones.

Matrox cards work fine, and are fast enough.

I also use Fluxbox for a window manager - it's small, fast, and clean. 
It isn't all that "pretty" though.

I use Netscape and Mozilla (and Opera (linux version)), and OpenOffice. 
  Basically, there isn't much I can't do with this.
