I went ahead and upgraded to FreeBSD10/amd64, in fact, I reinstalled from scratch. This was a mistake. Not only did the upgrade nothing to fix my problem, but in addition, wireless stopped working. This is pretty much as described here http://stackoverflow.com/questions/23103702/oddity-freebsd10-0-wpa-supplicant-pree-shared-keys-fail-networkmanager-linux, except the NIC is iwn instead of ath.
