I tried this also.  Did you by any chance use this along with
 /sbin/sysctl -w hw.atamodes=pio,pio,pio,pio in /etc/rc?  

I even saw a post saying that someone put it into /root/.profile and
/root/.login, although I am not sure how that was implemented or why.
