There used to be a mod_gzip module for Apache 1.3, but I'm unaware who
maintains it nowadays. I have an older version of that (it worked with
1.3.19a) and a patch for it I grabbed from the net so it properly emits
a Vary: accept-encoding header.

Apache 2 has this feature incorporated; see
http://httpd.apache.org/docs-2.0/mod/mod_deflate.html
