Kprop/Kpropd are gray, if and only if, someone wants to be a real stickler, since they are clients of Kerberos and one could claim that any call to a Kerberos routine that -could- perform encryption makes the entire call tainted. However a tainted version of the same code would have one bit changed in the entire object (a 0 becomes a 1, telling kerberos to encrypt as well as authenticate the connection). A conservative interpretation of US crypto export laws would lead one to believe that not only can you not export the actual crypto code, you cannot export code that has CALLS to the crypto code. We all know this is fundamentally bullshit, since the actual descriptions are intended to cover hardware (moving parts) devices, however the bastards who are screwing us in the first place have no motivation to indemnify anyone who tries to export code without a license, and no one has had the wherewithal to take this particular matter to court. The basic idea here is to foil people from doing plug-in encryption devices where "all but the crypto" is there and supported. The only difference between secure/*/*telnet* and */*telnet* is that the non-secure one has had all of the calls to anything that might remotely be considered encryption physically removed. This is an ultimate pain in the ass, since we need to maintain the farce of shipping an "un-tainted" version of source code for export, when we have a non-US repository that basicly mirrors the US secure repository. If we were to be less conservative in our interpretation of the law, we could ship all of secure/* in the normal source tree, and the only difference would be that secure/lib/libdes would remain in secure. In the exportable version, this would simply contain stubs, and we'd link against the stubs... then all you need to do is replace libdes.so.* with a real one and the system would do the right thing. I just find the whole thing hypocritical, since IMO, the entire point of the exercise is not to control the export of strong crypto, but rather to make it so bloody expensive for companies to incorporate strong general purpose cryptography in their products. Despite paying quite close attention to all the crypto discussions I've clearly missed something. I though we segregated the non-exportable stuff into secure so that we knew where it all was and could ship it as a separate module. One module in the US built from secure/* and another for the rest of the world built and shipped from your site. Please, check me, > if I am right, we can simple replace existent telnet. Calls to crypto code are also a problem. That is why we cannot export eBones and have our own DES lib. If you can squeeze the crypto calls into a totally separate file(s), which can be optionally linked with #ifdefs, I think the US export nazis will not object.. Indeed. We're still waiting for Joerg to give us the perl script for going through a directory hierarchy and removing anything that's both a file and not a child of any CVS/ directory. Then you could prep and remove in one operation, assuming that said perl script did one pass before the other for you. I've always wanted this sort of thing, but also make it a habit of ignoring any and all such irrefutable reminders that I really have to learn perl, no matter how much I hate its syntax.. :-) Jordan From owner-cvs-user Sat Aug 5 06:59:32 1995 Return-Path: cvs-user-owner Received: (from majordom@localhost) by freefall.cdrom.com (8.6.11/8.6.6) id GAA18706 for cvs-user-outgoing; Sat, 5 Aug 1995 06:59:32 -0700 Received: from haywire.DIALix.COM (haywire.DIALix.COM [192.203.228.65]) by freefall.cdrom.com (8.6.11/8.6.6) with ESMTP id GAA18700 ; Sat, 5 Aug 1995 06:59:13 -0700 Received: (from peter@localhost) by haywire.DIALix.COM (8.6.12/8.6.12/DIALix) id VAA03026; Sat, 5 Aug 1995 21:58:54 +0800 Date: Sat, 5 Aug 1995 21:58:53 +0800 (WST) From: Peter Wemm To: "Jordan K. You could do: descend -r 'cvs rm -f *' . The "-f" means to cvs that it should unlink the file, and 'cvs rm' it at the same time. You **must** use the "-r" to descend though, that causes it to skip the CVS directories.. :-) If this were to be commonly used, it'd probably want this option forced to be on by default... Oh, and it's not perl.. :-( Cheers, -Peter From owner-cvs-user Sat Aug 5 12:10:29 1995 Return-Path: cvs-user-owner Received: (from majordom@localhost) by freefall.cdrom.com (8.6.11/8.6.6) id MAA26049 for cvs-user-outgoing; Sat, 5 Aug 1995 12:10:29 -0700 Received: (from ache@localhost) by freefall.cdrom.com (8.6.11/8.6.6) id MAA26039 ; Sat, 5 Aug 1995 12:10:27 -0700 Date: Sat, 5 Aug 1995 12:10:27 -0700 From: "Andrey A.
