Sorry.. that was badly worded and not what I was thinking of... I knew what I had entered was in line with what everybody else had done, I was going to make a comment about the ordering in the file being inconsistant (the cleandir and i386 conditionals had a couple of entries out of alphabetical order.. no big deal), but Tristan (8 months old) decided that right that instant that I started the log message was a good time to wake up and demand a feed (it was about 3am or so, and he's currently rather unwell), and that's what blurted out while I was distracted.. I didn't want to risk aborting the commit, as some versions of cvs do stranger things than others.. I couldn't leave it there, as it'd leave the directory locked for an hour.. So we ended up with a not-very-confidence-inspiring commit message.. The version of cvs running on freefall will handle a q!, abort operation just fine. I have done it on so many occasions I don't care to count them any more. If we ever do get a version of cvs that fails this, it would be a class A1 bug in my book, meaning fix it today, or as fast as we can. I often get in to the commit, see the CVS: lines are not what I expected and abort the commit to go fix my mistake. [Often cvs add, or cvs remove commands forgotten]. Which reminds me, did you ever get any feedback from the cvs group to that small bug fix for 0 lenght RCS files in the repository? We still need to commit a fix and get a new version of cvs installed on freefall. -- Rod Grimes rgrimes@gndrsh.aac.dev.com Accurate Automation Company Reliable computers for FreeBSD From owner-cvs-usrsbin Sun Aug 13 18:56:23 1995 Return-Path: cvs-usrsbin-owner Received: (from majordom@localhost) by freefall.FreeBSD.org (8.6.11/8.6.6) id SAA19718 for cvs-usrsbin-outgoing; Sun, 13 Aug 1995 18:56:23 -0700 Received: (from peter@localhost) by freefall.FreeBSD.org (8.6.11/8.6.6) id SAA19708 ; Sun, 13 Aug 1995 18:56:19 -0700 Date: Sun, 13 Aug 1995 18:56:19 -0700 From: Peter Wemm Message-Id: <199508140156.SAA19708@freefall.FreeBSD.org> To: CVS-commiters, cvs-usrsbin Subject: cvs commit: src/usr.sbin/sicontrol sicontrol.8 sicontrol.c Sender: cvs-usrsbin-owner@freebsd.org Precedence: bulk peter 95/08/13 18:56:18 Modified: usr.sbin/sicontrol sicontrol.c Added: usr.sbin/sicontrol sicontrol.8 Log: Add skeleton manpage, so that make world works...... We tried all sorts of neat tricks, including directly editing the RCS files, but we were unable to get what we needed. I built up rdist-6.1.0 two days ago, and merged our bugfix with Deborah's FreeBSD printf changes... I was going to ask if I could do it too.. :-) Rdist-6.1 gets arounf the traditional security problem of running setuid-root, by opening a pipe to rsh. This is unnecessary if you are *already* running as root, as you can do a rcmd() directly. Much less CPU and context switches when updating 30 machines at once.. :-) -Peter From owner-cvs-usrsbin Wed Aug 16 22:34:43 1995 Return-Path: cvs-usrsbin-owner Received: (from majordom@localhost) by freefall.FreeBSD.org (8.6.11/8.6.6) id WAA21111 for cvs-usrsbin-outgoing; Wed, 16 Aug 1995 22:34:43 -0700 Received: from gndrsh.aac.dev.com (gndrsh.aac.dev.com [198.145.92.241]) by freefall.FreeBSD.org (8.6.11/8.6.6) with ESMTP id WAA21104 ; Wed, 16 Aug 1995 22:34:33 -0700 Received: (from rgrimes@localhost) by gndrsh.aac.dev.com (8.6.11/8.6.9) id WAA22231; Wed, 16 Aug 1995 22:33:15 -0700 From: "Rodney W. FYI, this screams of wanting more details, this is a purposeful leak, Peter, Paul Traina, and myself are off looking at alternative mechanisms and paradigms to try and solve some of the problems we have with the current maintenance of vendor code. We have some ideas (thanks to Peter!), some definite goals (thanks to Paul!), and some definite direction (thats what I am trying to do). Once we go play with these ideas, goals, and directions off in some dirty dusty cvs repositories we intend to present a white paper to this group that will allow us to move forward into implementing what we have learned, and hopefully solve our vendor branch problems once and for all. We can't say a whole lot about it until we have a chance to go play with it, so to give us a chance to move on to the larger (and, IMHO, more important) problem of how to get _all_ of the code fixed we are going to use the old paradigm of how the code had been currently maintained to fix sendmail and bind, and those are 2 seriously sore spots. The same most likely goes for at and atrun, but Peter might have a trick up his sleeve her yet, or at least, from his last email it indicated he might. I see a lot of calling for ``gee, great, how about this next'', if we drag the resource off to fix todays problems and don't leave some of them for working on tomorrows problems, we will end up snow balled and never get to tomorrows problems until they are staring us straight in the face as todays problems :-(. {God, thats hard to read, can you understand what I was trying to say???} -- Rod Grimes rgrimes@gndrsh.aac.dev.com Accurate Automation Company Reliable computers for FreeBSD From owner-cvs-usrsbin Wed Aug 16 22:36:22 1995 Return-Path: cvs-usrsbin-owner Received: (from majordom@localhost) by freefall.FreeBSD.org (8.6.11/8.6.6) id WAA21139 for cvs-usrsbin-outgoing; Wed, 16 Aug 1995 22:36:22 -0700 Received: from haywire.DIALix.COM (haywire.DIALix.COM [192.203.228.65]) by freefall.FreeBSD.org (8.6.11/8.6.6) with ESMTP id WAA21132 ; Wed, 16 Aug 1995 22:36:14 -0700 Received: (from peter@localhost) by haywire.DIALix.COM (8.7.Beta.11/8.7.Beta.11/DIALix) id NAA02573; Thu, 17 Aug 1995 13:34:55 +0800 (WST) Date: Thu, 17 Aug 1995 13:34:55 +0800 (WST) From: Peter Wemm To: Paul Traina cc: "Jordan K. Given that as a definate requirement, and providing that it works properly, I think it is worth proceding... The "convention" seems to be to rename the old binary out of the way, and execing it. I dont see that as an option for a source distribution, so I guess we'd need to actually have an "oldrdist" build target.... -Peter > Paul > > From: "Jordan K. Given that -it- is the one going through development, it offers new features, and it is supported elsewhere, that seems like the best compromise. The new rdist doesn't have to ship as part of FreeBSD (at this time), and it would be a good canidate for moving to the external heirarchy once it (and we) mature. paul From: "Jordan K. It's my understanding that this is a superset of cdplay, and perhaps it's time to send cdplay into the bit bucket if this works well. According to the docs, it has a friendlier command structure, command line interface etc. Submitted by: Serge Vakulenko
