It was translated from DocBook to LaTeX using some tools I developed in house. The filter itself is a Perl5 script that is driven by the ESIS output from sgmls. Each tag in the DTD is represented by a class (in the object-oriented sense) in Perl. We have a more robust script, using the same design, that filters from DocBook to troff for printing our books (Graphic File Formats, Managing Internet Information Systems, both of the Linux books and a couple of others have been printed this way). I'm also working on a DocBook to RTF filter on the same design, but that's really primitive at the moment. We're writing a book describing the tools and we'll be releasing the whole package as soon as that is ready (no title or release date yet). Hope that helps... I originally volunteered to help with docs quite a while back, but my work situation ate up all my time, so nothing happened. Now I am not working, and so I have tons of time. If you need any help, I'll be happy to pitch in! Though, jkh says you are doing a great job, so maybe you don't need the help :-) But, if you get into a tight spot, let me know -- I have plenty of time right now to devote to the cause. (I'm running the next-to-the-latest-greatest version of FreeBSD on whisker at the moment -- I'll get Jordan to send me the latest....if you have some installation docs you'd like tested, that would be a good way to test them!) I have an account on freefall.cdrom.com, also, so I can ftp anything you want me to work on from there. Well, let me know if you'd like some help. At any rate, one thing I *would* like to do (if needed) is bolt together a quick reference guide to installing and acquainting one's self with FreeBSD. Does anything like that presently exist? We use a variant of the Linux DTD layered on top of SGML to do the documents -- anyone know where John's latest package containing his updated scripts / DTD is? let me know and I'll add a pointer to it in the faq-new page. Anyway, the latest and greatest version is the Feb 10 snapshot. You can find it and all of the associated release notes at ftp://ftp.freebsd.org/pub/FreeBSD/2.0-950210-SNAP/ The INSTALL document is the main thing to help people get the system up, along with the ultra-friendly install procedures themselves (I'm not being sarcastic there -- it really tries to hold your hand, IMO). Due to the current flack we've been getting as of late, I'd say that we really need a toned down intro to installation in SGML -- number 3 on the Tutorials list. I'll jot some notes down and try and get something going with it. Lastly -- anyone know the release timeline for 2.1? Some minor corrections, at this point we are using the Linuxdoc DTD, not a variant of it and "layered on top of SGML" isn't really correct, but whatever... To process documents tagged according to the linuxdoc DTD you need (1) the DTD, (2) the sgmls SGML parser and companion program sgmlsasp, (3) the "replacement" files that sgmlsasp uses to map tags in the original SGML document into whatever output you want (e.g. HTML tags, LaTeX, troff, etc.), and (4) a program to tie it all together. #1 and #3 come as one package and #2 can be had at ftp://ftp.jclark.com/. It should compile out of the box on 2.0R and later systems and I have some patches that work under 1.1.5.1 (at least). #4 is a problem. What comes in the linuxdoc packge is really ugly but sort of works. I started a rewrite in perl but ran out of spare time. I mailed what I had to Gary Clark. I also started some modifications to the linuxdoc DTD, but at this point, I think it would be a better plan to migrate over to the docbook dtd. Unfortunately, conversion tools are not (yet) publically available and the complexity of the DTD makes it moderately difficult to whip up a production quality converter. > The INSTALL document is the main thing to help people get the system up, > along with the ultra-friendly install procedures themselves (I'm not > being sarcastic there -- it really tries to hold your hand, IMO). However, this document overlooks some fundamental questions like where do I find the distribution, what files do I need to download, and what do I do with them once I've downloaded them. I've been with this since the early 386BSD days and I couldn't even figure out how to do an install from tape because the relevant information was not provided until late in the installation process. I like to have everything prepared for the installation BEFORE I start and I know other people do as well. What the install document desparately needs is an overview. The current one grabs your hand and stampeeds into the details without stopping to mention where you are going. The document should start with table of contents something like: 1. Basic hardware requirements 2. What the installation process will do to your system 2.1 repartition your hard drive 3. Preparing for the installation 3.1 Choose a method 3.1.1 CD-ROM 3.1.2 FTP 3.1.3 DOS partition 3.1.4 Tape 3.1.n ... 3.2 Making a boot floppy (Including the dd commands!) 4. And really, nothing wrong with the conversion either, just a choice made by the author of the conversion tool. I recently submitted my revised FAQ entry (incorporating Jordan's comments) for the serial communications section which includes help on tip. But, don't let that stop you from submitting any documentation! It'd be nice if there was a manual, written in a tutorial style and not the question style of a FAQ, that users could print out or could get with the CD-ROM. Richard> Wonder if it's OK to modify the tip(1) code to become a Richard> little smarter, or if UCB would be annoyed ? ( Assuming Richard> it's the former - pretty sure. ) Well, you could certainly modify your own copy. Moreover, a call-unit definition that users could specify in their /etc/remote file would certianly go over. That's what I'm planning on submitting: a smarter dialer for today's popular Hayes-compatible modems. Richard> I'm looking for expert help on setting on internal modems Richard> for dialup, if there's anyone out there who'd care to Richard> volunteer to answer a few questions. See the serial communications section of the FAQ---as soon as it's incorporated! Richard> Having some problems getting the outgoing login prompt to Richard> be issued at the right baud rate ... wonder if having a Richard> modem directly connected to the buss instead of accessed Richard> through a UART might not confuse things ... ? What you need is a modem that uses a constant DTE-to-DCE speed but can autobaud the DCE-DCE speed. Use whatever command/dip switch/incantion is necessary to get your modem to do that and save that as its reset state. You should also have your modem hangup and reset when DTR goes from on-to-off. Have it use RTS/CTS or no flow control at all. And have it assert carrier detect only when it really detects a carrier. And in /etc/ttys, specify the constant DTE-DCE bps rate. I have tried the following: #pppd /dev/cua02 57600 connect 'chat "ATDT9431198" "CONNECT"' and this doesn't do anything to the modem. I have read through the pppd and chat man pages and it hasn't really helped. I check in the new FAQ and it does not include anything on pppd and chat. Even some ideas on things to check would really be helpful. Thanks. Duane
