Well, having done that gave me a nice error trying to run /stand/sysinstall. I guess this is true for most, if not all, programs in /stand. In section 5.3.4 in reference to the npx0 device (math co-processor), it is stated: "npx0 is the interface to the math coprocessor. . . If you do not have a math coprocessor, you can comment this out." However, attempting to compile a kernel without the npx0 line always results in a link-time (or possibly compile-time, but I think it was link) error. I use the GPL floating-point emulation library. (From the >view of a boot manager, FreeBSD seems to behave like MS-DOS - just >as it should be.) (sorry, can't copy the lilo-config from here, >don't wanna reboot now.) Well, after much futzing around, I managed to get a minimal FreeBSD installation installed and booting from OS/2's boot manager. There are some gotchas in there that can catch someone used to linux's flexible booting that I'll outline. First, on my setup, I have 2 ide drives used by dos, win95, and os/2, and an adaptec 1542 with 2 scsi drives. This makes the adaptec bios inaccessable to the boot bios, so a kernel has to be in memory to supply the scsi driver to access the root drive. With linux this is no big deal, because linux allows you several different ways to tell the kernel which drive to mount as /. I used a tiny partition on the second ide drive to hold the linux kernel. This partition is in the os/2 boot manager menu. So, my first gotcha came when I repartitioned for FreeBSD. After determining that I would have to have the root filesystem one of the ide drives to get FreeBSD to boot, I repartitioned the drive that had the linux partition on it and added a 40 meg partition for FreeBSD. However, I missed the documentation that said that FreeBSD doesn't understand logical partitions. I figured it out pretty quick when I saw no logical partitions in the partition editor in the install. So, I repartitioned again to give FreeBSD a primary partition, using fdisk for linux, and added that to os/2's boot manager menu. Then I installed, after partitioning the scsi drive for /usr and swap. This all worked fine except for the boot block install program writeing boot blocks both to the root of my main ide drive as well as the root of the partition I put FreeBSD on. This meant another boot from the os/2 disks to reinstall the os/2 boiot manager boot block. Hope this helps someone else spend a little less time than I did installing. -- John Henders BOFH Wimsey Information Systems. My system installation never made it that far. Perhaps this is a specific problem and not many users experience it... I am installing FREEBSD from a DOS partition (my ACER IDE CD-ROM is unsupported). I went through all the pre-installation steps and allocated a complete 1.2 Gig hard drive to the installation.I also made sure my dierctories were the correct size. I then copied the installation files (ie. FREEBSD\DISTS\BIN) to my C:\FREEBSD directory, as outlined in the instructions. I did this for all of the files I wished to install, by the numbers. I selected all of my options, and then 'committed' them. Here's the proverbial rub... FREEBSD began installation but hung with an error of "cannot create the ROOT image" or something to that extent. I tried this several times and always would hang at this point. The message simply concluded "correct problem and retry." As a backup, I created a set of installation floppies for the MAN pages, and the Binaries. Installation went fine, however, I booted into a UNIX environment with none of the extras. No X, No nothing...When I tried to create floppies for X, I noticed that some of the files were 1.6m, rather difficult to get on a 1.44m floppy :( In summary I'm wondering if anyone else has had this problem installing from a DOS partition? Is it possible that the *.flp images need to be "raw" copied onto my installation (source) hard dive? If so rawrite won't do it, it wants a floppy...I copied everything exactly stated in the instructions, and even checked the files with 'FC /b' to make sure they were the same (which they were). In text mode of the install I noticed that gzip reported the files were corrupt and prematurely ended, yet this isn't a problem when creating a boot floppy off of CD. HELP?!? Darin M. At some point in the not too distant past, the /dev entries for serial devices were renamed. Your system (at least your /dev directory) apparently originated prior to the great re-naming. The organization is a total mess. I've got a few pieces pieces that were submitted some time ago that should go in, but the organization needs to be ironed out first. A lot of people have been asking how they can help lately (especially after the BYTE article was published) and this is my attempt to document it. However, we won't be able to complain very much about not getting long-standing brokenness fixed if we fail to document the fact that it needs fixing at all, so I'd like to see this list expanded and maintained. I'll take responsibility for going through the list every once in awhile and weeding out things that have already been fixed, but I'm relying on you folks to generate much of the initial content. If you have commit access, please feel free to add entries to the handbook directly (just don't break it please :-). Thanks! Jordan
