This is SCSI-2 CDROM changer (jukebox) for 6 CDs. It represents itself as SCSI ID 5 (for example) and 6 LUNs within it. It can be mounted as 6 different CDs and changer substitute corresponding disk at access query. That SCSI device was successfully configured and works under FreeBSD 1.1.5 by recompiling kernel with follow lines in config file: device cd0 device uk0 and devices /dev/cd[0-5] was made. All works fine, all LUNs are recognized, probed and configured during boot. No problem. Otherwise in SNAP950322. After adding device cd0 in config file, system recognize only one (first) CD, which have LUN=0. Seems to be only first (0) LUN are probed by default, and result of "scsi -f /dev/cd0a -p" command to reprobe whole device (all LUNs) is: "0:inappropriate ioctl for device: SCIOCADDR" "...." "6:inappropriate ioctl for device: SCIOCADDR" Looking through the code, I've found and add options NEW_SCSICONF in config. Now system probe _all_ CD LUNs and I can mount its, but system dumps to core randomizely at "bio" (suppose, DMA operations) when I tries to execute some "ls -lR /cd's_mountpoint/cd[0-5]& ; du / &" processes. I seems there is some bug in cd's driver in this SNAP, because few "du" commands running simultaneously at 3 scsi HD at the same controller (without mounted CDs) don't crash the system. SCSI bus terminating are correct. My hardware is: Pentium 66/ISA/PCI, 16 RAM, PCI-SCSI NCR53c810 controller, 3 scsi hard disks and Pioneer DRM 640X CDROM changer. With Adaptec AHA1542(ISA) SCSI controller instead NCR53c810 one I've got the same results.... Current system is FreeBSD 2.0.0-SNAP950322. Can anybody help me? P.S. The probe always succeeds on the second machine (at least as long as I played with it), the 1542 on the first machine sometimes locks up; the kernel probes the aha0, then it hangs. This also happened in the Disk Utility menu of the adapters SCSISelect software (it hangs while scanning for devices on the SCSI bus), so I don't think it's a FreeBSD specific problem. If the probe succeeds on machine I, both systems show the same behaviour: I can use the disk for a short while until sd1(aha0:1:0): timed out sd0(aha0:0:0): timed out adapter not taking commands.. frozen?! Debugger ("aha1542") called. AGAIN aha0: MBO not free These messages appear repeatedly, only way out is a reset. I haven't found a pattern which causes the locks. I guess the ``aha0: MBO not free'' is caused by the running process which tries to write to the disk when the 1542 hasn't emptied its buffers. The new drive works fine if it's alone on the SCSI bus. I have tried enabling/disabling the TI Sync Negotiation and/or Unit Attention on the drive to no avail. Any ideas? Any more info you need? tg From owner-freebsd-hardware Wed Jun 14 03:18:11 1995 Return-Path: hardware-owner Received: (from majordom@localhost) by freefall.cdrom.com (8.6.10/8.6.6) id DAA00790 for hardware-outgoing; Wed, 14 Jun 1995 03:18:11 -0700 Received: from hda.com (hda.com [199.232.40.182]) by freefall.cdrom.com (8.6.10/8.6.6) with ESMTP id DAA00782 for ; Wed, 14 Jun 1995 03:18:08 -0700 Received: (dufault@localhost) by hda.com (8.6.11/8.3) id FAA14968; Wed, 14 Jun 1995 05:59:19 -0400 From: Peter Dufault Message-Id: <199506140959.FAA14968@hda.com> Subject: Re: Pioneer DRM 604X CD ROM changer under FreeBSD 2.0.0-SNAP950322 To: joker@avangard.master.nsk.su (Serge Goncharov) Date: Wed, 14 Jun 1995 05:59:18 -0400 (EDT) Cc: freebsd-hardware@FreeBSD.ORG In-Reply-To: <3rlvil$h6u@avangard.master.nsk.su> from "Serge Goncharov" at Jun 14, 95 06:28:37 am X-Mailer: ELM [version 2.4 PL24] Content-Type: text Content-Length: 1766 Sender: hardware-owner@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk Serge Goncharov writes: > > I have Pioneer DRM-604x drive. I'm not sure what to suggest other than cable problems with an early unmodified 1542C. >From the comp.periphs.scsi FAQ: ==== QUESTION: What is the problem with the Adaptec 1542C and external cables? ANSWER From: Scot Stelter, Adaptec (Product Manager for the AHA-1540) ==== Several articles lately have cited the importance of SCSI-2-compliant cables when cabling SCSI bus subsystems. Perhaps the most accurate and technically detailed one was published in Computer Technology Review in March (Volume XIII, No. 3. PP. 6). In short, it explains the double-clocking mechanism that can occur due to cables whose impedance falls below the 90-Ohm SCSI-2 spec. Steep edge speeds on the REQ and ACK lines of the SCSI bus exacerbate the problem, but non-compliant cables are the root cause. Both LAN TIMES in the US (5/24/93, page 115) and CT Magazine in Germany (7/93, page 18) cite this cable problem. In an extensive survey of cables available in the US and Europe, we found that more than half of the cables available have single-ended impedances in the 65 to 80 Ohm range -- below the 90 to 132 Ohms specified in the SCSI-2 spec. It seems that some (not all) cable vendors do not understand the specification, describing their cables as SCSI-2 compliant when they are not. A common misconception is that SCSI-2 means a high-density connector. In fact, there are several connector options. I have published a technical bulletin that summarizes the critical requirements (TB 001, April 1993). An artifact of its faster design left the AHA-1540C with faster edge-speeds than its predecessor, the AHA-1540B. As I have said, this can exacerbate the effect of bad cables. This explains why some users could get their AHA-1540B to work when an early AHA-1540C might not. Essentially, the 1540B was more forgiving than the early 1540Cs. Good cables fixed the problem, but unfortunately for the user, good cables are hard to find. After surveying the cable market and many of our customers, we decided that bad cables were going to be here for a while, and we had to make the 1540C as forgiving as the 1540B was. At the end of April we made a change to the AHA-1540C that involved using a passive filter to reduce the slew rate of the ACK line, the signal that the host adapter drives during normal data transfers. Extensive testing with many intentionally illegal configurations confirms that we succeeded. Prior to release, we tested the AHA-1540C with over 200 peripherals, systems and demanding software programs with no failures. Then, a second team retested the AHA-1540C across a wild combination of temperatures, humidities and other stresses. This testing gives me confidence that the AHA-1540 line continues to serve as the gold standard for SCSI compatibility. -- Peter Dufault Real Time Machine Control and Simulation HD Associates, Inc. And from looking at my current revision board I can not see a revision stamp that would tell me much of anything (PC artwork is rev C, this has the ``passive filter'' properly intergrated into the design artwork, the first batch of fixed boards had it soldered on the back side of the card as a resistor and a capacitor near the external connector). -- Rod Grimes rgrimes@gndrsh.aac.dev.com Accurate Automation Company Custom computers for FreeBSD From owner-freebsd-hardware Wed Jun 14 15:08:07 1995 Return-Path: hardware-owner Received: (from majordom@localhost) by freefall.cdrom.com (8.6.10/8.6.6) id PAA01706 for hardware-outgoing; Wed, 14 Jun 1995 15:08:07 -0700 Received: from kryten.atinc.com (kryten.atinc.com [198.138.38.7]) by freefall.cdrom.com (8.6.10/8.6.6) with ESMTP id PAA01699 for ; Wed, 14 Jun 1995 15:08:05 -0700 Received: (jmb@localhost) by kryten.atinc.com (8.6.9/8.3) id SAA25681; Wed, 14 Jun 1995 18:02:14 -0400 Date: Wed, 14 Jun 1995 18:02:14 -0400 (EDT) From: "Jonathan M.
